In 2012, the Iowa legislature made major changes to Iowa’s Mechanic’s Lien laws. These changes added new definitions, new notice requirements, and fundamentally changed the way that liens are filed in Iowa. The biggest change in the rules after January 1, 2013, was the creation of a centralized on-line database that is managed by the Secretary of State and must be used for all Mechanic’s Liens in Iowa, will provide guidance on how to use the Iowa Secretary of State’s Mechanic’s Notice and Lien Registry, and will provide practical advice for how to handle lien filings and lien situations.
