Suicide is the leading cause of death among construction workers — surpassing on-site fatalities. Yet it remains one of the least talked-about safety issues in the industry. This first session breaks that silence. Drawing from the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention's Talk Saves Lives curriculum, participants will build foundational awareness of suicide risk, learn how to recognize warning signs in coworkers, and gain the confidence to start a conversation that could save a life.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

  • Describe the scope of suicide in the construction industry and why the trades face elevated risk
  • Identify common warning signs and behavioral changes that may indicate a coworker is struggling
  • Explain the relationship between mental health stigma and suicide risk in construction culture
  • Demonstrate how to initiate a direct, non-judgmental check-in conversation with a coworker
  • Identify immediate crisis resources, including the 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline
