BuildHer: Capability Under Construction

Strong leaders do more than complete tasks, solve immediate problems, or give people the right answers. They create conditions in which others learn to think, contribute, experiment, reflect, and solve increasingly difficult problems. BuildHER: Capability Under Construction is an interactive session focused on strengthening each participant’s ability to develop themselves, while intentionally developing the people around them. Participants will explore the difference between transferring knowledge, teaching a skill, and building true capability, the capacity to apply learning across changing situations without constantly depending on someone else for direction.

Adam Hoots introduces practical capability-building behaviors, including purposeful reflection, stretching beyond the comfort zone, providing clear structure while allowing people to develop their own solutions, practicing Radical Candor, and improving the quality of questions and listening. Participants will also examine how leadership behaviors, feedback, opportunity, psychological safety, and workplace culture can either reinforce growth or quietly reduce people’s confidence, initiative, and capability. The presentation treats capability development as a connected system rather than a single training event. Knowledge and skill must be supported by opportunities to apply learning, coaching, reflection, experimentation, feedback, and experience across different circumstances.
